This is a song about my Grandad.

lyrics

My grandfather told me
Stories of war
He spoke of the Russians
Who broke down his door
To murder his parents
Infront of his eyes
He escaped with a bullet
And a weight on his mind

Found by the Germans
In Poland he stayed
He stood near the border
And thought of his home in Ukraine

After his voice dropped
To the front he did march
To fight for a facist
He never did ask
The winter was colder than cold
Like he always knew
And he told the Germans
Get ready to lose

As men became statues
Of ice by the lake
He sat smoking dry leaves
And thought of his home in Ukraine

After the war he,
Was laughing alone,
You can go west son,
Or you can go home
He looked at the union
And said I think I’m alright.
And headed for Norwich,
With hope in his eyes

The war wounded Jester,
Made the most of his pain.
He drank whiskey in England
And thought of his home in Ukraine

An Italian women
Soon stole his heart
She was running just like him,
Waiting to start
Soon to be married
In a Hammersmith home
They gave birth to Maria
And soon watched her grow

With pride in our hearts
We all took his name
And with a stiff upper lip
We think of our home in Ukraine

In 2012
his heart had grown weak
In a hospital wing
We’d sit there and speak
I said to my grandad
I’m learning to sing
Do you remember the answer
Is blowing in the wind

As we sang the chorus
On our final day
I’ll always wonder
If he thought of his home in Ukraine
